What is a sorority?
First and foremost, we are a sisterhood of women gathered together to work toward a common goal. That goal in Sigma Lambda Sigma is to provide service to the university, community, and nation. A sorority is an organization you will be a part of for the rest of your life. The benefits go well beyond your time in higher education. By joining a sorority, you will get so much more from your college experience than a degree. You will learn leadership skills, as well as gain important social networking skills.
How to become a Sigma!
If you are interested in becoming a part of our sorority, rush is a great place to start! Rush is the process in which we meet young women who are interested in our sorority. The purpose of rush is for us to meet you, and for you to meet us. Here, you can ask any questions you might have, and we will do the best we can to answer them for you. There's no reason to be shy! If you chose to participate in rush, there's no commitment to join. Just show up at one of our posted events, hang out, and have some fun!
At LSSU, Rush Week is usually the second week of each semester. Rushees that appear to exhibit the qualities of sisterhood that we are look for, are extended an invitation (a bid) to join our sisterhood. We, of course, recommend that you attend the rush events for other campus sororities (Alpha Theta Omega, Alpha Kappa Chi, and Rho Chi Omega) as well. Different people sometimes fit in better with different groups. Joining a sorority is a big decision. Be sure the one you choose is the one for you!
Why join Sigma Lambda Sigma?
Sisterhood is a way of life for Sigma Lambda Sigma. We support each other in times of need, and develop friendships that will last forever. Members of Sigma Lambda Sigma learn to respect and understand people from all backgrounds. There is no way to stereotype a Sigma, because we are all unique. Our differences are what brings us together. However, there are a few qualities that are present in every Sigma. Loyalty, trust, compassion, dependability, and ambition to name a few. If you feel that you exhibit these qualities, Sigma Lambda Sigma might just be right for you!
What do we look for in a Sigma?
Responsibility
Joining Sigma Lambda Sigma, although rewarding, requires a lot of hard work and determination. If you feel that you are too tied down with other activities, you might want to wait until you have more time available to devote to the responsibilities that this sort of commitment would require.
Loyalty
This is the most important quality of a sister. Every one of our members exhibits this quality. As a member of Sigma Lambda Sigma, you will never be without a friend in a time of need. In return, you should always be there for your sisters when they need you. This is not an unreasonable demand. When you care about people the way we care about each other, loyalty comes naturally.
Kindness
As a member of a group, it is important to remember that feelings of others before yourself. Not only within the sisterhood, but in the community around you. When you are in public, you will not only be representing yourself, but you will be representing the entire sorority. Take a few minutes out of your day to do something nice; hold a door for someone, say hello to someone in the hall, donate a dollar to a good cause. It will make others feel good, and it will make you feel good too!
Understanding
When you are a part of any large group, you have to learn to be open-minded. Sigmas pride themselves on their individuality. It is important to understand that just because someone isn't just like you, it doesn't mean that you can't get along. When you take the time to get to know someone new, you will discover new friendships in the most unlikely places.
These are just a few of the qualities of a Sigma! If you exhibit these characteristics, or even if you aspire to exhibit these characteristics, we are looking for you! This is an organization that will better you as a person (even if you're already perfect). So if you want to make a difference, make lifelong friends, and have a good time, check us out!
