Our History

Founded locally in 1994 by Trindal Stanke, Sigma Lambda Sigma is Lake Superior State University's only service sorority. The sisterhood puts special emphasis on the ideals of service, leadership, and sisterhood. Every year, Sigma hosts its annual Box Sit outside of Walmart, an event which helps to fundraise and supply food for underprivileged families for Thanksgiving.

The sisterhood is comprised of young women from diverse backgrounds and majors, and everyone is highly valued for her own uniqueness and talents. Sigma Lambda Sigma fosters a welcoming environment where everyone is meant to feel comfortable, and all viewpoints, ideas and opinions are respected equally.

Our main philanthropy is the American Heart Association, and we hosted our first annual Jump-a-thon fundraiser to raise money for heart health in 2016. Past philanthropies also include the Salvation Army and Department of Human Resources of Sault Ste. Marie. We also regularly visit the local animal shelter to volunteer.

Our purpose as Sigma Lambda Sigma is providing services to our community. Sigma Lambda Sigma stands for Service, Leadership, and Sisterhood, which are very important values we hold. Though our chapter became activated in 1994, our history as a sorority dates back to the 1960's with the foundation of our Alpha Chapter at Northern Illinois University.

Some of the service projects Sigma Lambda Sigma hosts are Box Sit in the fall semester, and Jump-a-thon in the spring semester. We also hold a Red Heart event, which raises money for the American Heart Association though our formal.

Though we are a heavily service based sorority, we still have social events. We plan our social activities with our other Greek Organizations on campus to build relationships between our Greek Life on campus.

In order to stay an active member, you must complete fifteen hours of community service per semester, attend at least 50% of the sorority's events, attend meetings, be a productive leader, and show pride in participation in our sisterhood.
